Hey Smidgers, we have a tiny kitchen! Almost…
Wow! I know it’s been a really long time. In the last post, I promised to get better with posting and try to get regular updates to you. Well, life kind of got in the way of that promise. Between work, and everything that I have to do when I’m not at work, you guys kind of got pushed to the back burner. I apologize. I need to do a better job with time management. I will get better, please bear with me.
Now on to happier things. We have more updates on the tiny house. The flooring is installed. I have to apologize, but I don’t really have a picture of the full house floor. I will get one for the next update. Here is a picture showing the access hatch in the floor so you can see what the floor looks like.
I like to call the area under the hatch the basement. I have never lived in an area that had basements, so I think it’s cool that I finally have one. It’s more like a crawl space, though. It’s only about a foot deep. We have to figure out a cool storage system for The Lovely Amy’s craft stuff. Between the shelves that we are going to build under the counter top and the basement, we think we will be able to store most of her things. Now we just need to come up with a place for a smoker, and a brewery, then we will be really set!
We almost have a working tiny kitchen. The cabinets are in, the countertops are installed, and the shelves and range hood are in! I think they really came out great. I really love the shelves, they may be my favorite thing in the whole house. I had to do a little explaining to our contractor, but I think he nailed it.
The Lovely Amy talked me out of a completely white and dark wood color scheme, and looking at the backsplash and dark countertops, I think she was right. I really like how the tile backsplash works with the white cabinets and dark countertops.
By the time you read this, the plumber should have the faucets, shower head, and hot water heater installed. Then it’s up to me to finish the electrical and touch up the paint.
The bathroom is coming along nicely, but that’s another post for another day! But I will leave you with a teaser. This is the door leading to the bathroom.
I have been asked by quite a few people about why we decided to build a tiny house instead of just buying a camper and calling it a day. I tell them that there are a few reasons.
The main one is the cool factor. Show me a camper built this strongly, and with this level of fixtures, and I bet it costs a small fortune. Once it’s all finished, I figure I will have about $50,000 invested. Not going to find a camper this nice for that price! The other main reason I went this way is peace of mind. This is a little house. Yes, it’s built on wheels, but it is so much stronger than a camper.
I have slept in campers. They really move around when the wind gets to blowing. Once we get the tiny moved to North Carolina, I plan on lifting it and placing it on posts and using mobile home straps to secure it so it won’t blow over. You just can’t do that easily with a camper. It has been a long slog, but I think it will be worth it in the end.
Until next time Smidgers…
