Hey Smidgers,
Ok. I know that I have been teasing you with the posts about going tiny. Today I am finally able to introduce “La Petite Maison de Kinler”. The Lovely Amy and I have been talking about this for quite a while, and a week or so we took the plunge. We bought a tiny house!
We had been going around and around about whether to buy or build, and what kind of trailer we wanted to build it on, and so many other questions. We were thinking that to get what we wanted, we were going to have to get a 28 to 30-foot trailer, and have two lofts. Then we started noticing people building their tiny houses on gooseneck of fifth wheel trailers. This got us thinking, and me looking to find a trailer.
The whole time we were having these discussions, I had been looking online to see what was out there. One day, I found what turned out to be the perfect tiny house for us. I sent the builder an email asking a few questions and sent the listing to The Lovely Amy. After a few emails and phone calls between the three of us, we agreed upon a price, and Austin from Timberline Tiny Homes agreed to deliver our little piece of heaven.
Now the hard work begins. As of right now, it’s just an empty shell. There is only one small wall where the bathroom is going to start.
We think we have our color and design theme picked out, but that is always subject to change. Since I still work offshore in the oil industry, I don’t have a lot of free time, we are thinking about hiring a contractor to finish it for us. If that doesn’t happen, it will still get done, it will just take a lot longer. If we can’t find a contractor I am able to do most of the work myself, I will probably only contract out the plumbing.
We are thinking about having dark hardwood floors, white kitchen cabinets with dark counters, and light blue walls. In the bedroom, we are planning on having a dark wood accent wall, and possibly adding a skylight. The picture to the left is looking from the bathroom area towards what will be the bedroom and kitchen area. Thre will be a small stairway leading up to the bedroom on the left side of the house. From there, and wrapping around the right side of the house will be the kitchen. We will have to close in the hole that you see in the floor. That is actually access to the below floor storage that runs the length of the trailer. Pretty cool huh?
The bathroom will be one of the coolest bathrooms that I have seen in a tiny house if I can pull it off. We are thinking about cypress walls throughout the entire bathroom, with a copper shower pan. It will be on one side of the bathroom, with a sink and all in one washer/dryer on the other side. The only question we have is where to put the toilet. We have two thoughts on the toilet. Either make a small shower, and tuck the toilet behind it, or put it on the back wall under the window. What do you think?
We are planning on adding a second small wall section and hang a barn door to separate the bathroom from the rest of the house.
The loft that you see will be used for storage at first. We are thinking about lowering it about six inches so we can put a second bed up there for guests, but we are still mulling that over.
Once we get it finished, we plan on moving it to be closer to our daughter and grandkids in North Carolina. That way we can be more involved in their lives. We don’t get to see them near enough now. This way we can just drive up there and not have to worry about staying in a hotel, or imposing on them. It will be our own little slice of heaven.
I plan on posting updates as they happen so keep reading smidgers…
